Newsletter - Spring 08
05/05/08 00:45
As promised in my December 2007 Newsletter I am writing to update you on what is happening at the Community Centre.
As you walk into the side entrance hall you will notice redecoration, done by a working party from the Opera Group. The toilets have been spruced up also.
The kitchen has had a major clean and redecoration and will be ready for Pensioner’s Lunches by 24th April. When our catering manager left at the end of January the Trustees took the opportunity to close the kitchen and volunteer Trustees (and a spouse) have made a vast improvement. Watch the notice board for regular cooking to resume.
User groups can use the kitchen for hot drinks and anyone hiring the Main Hall will be able to bring in caterers who hold the necessary Food Hygiene qualification, providing the kitchen is left in a clean and tidy condition.
John Green, the centre manager, also left at the end of November to take up a job in Security. We wish him well. He has not been replaced. Trustees have undertaken a few of his jobs and Gill Barton, our office administrator, continues to run the office very well. She has been a great help since John left and has been able to advise us on many aspects of the running of the Centre.
Tony and Pat Garrett, the Bar Manager and his wife, retired at the end of March. We all hope they have a long, healthy and happy retirement. They have been made Honary Life Members so I hope we will see them around. Nancy Clarke has been appointed Bar Manageress. I am sure she will be an asset to the Social Club and work well with our other experienced staff to create a cheerful and friendly atmosphere.
Two of our older Trustees have resigned. Alec Harding and Alex Bossley. They felt that they would like to stand down and I would like to thank them for their many years of service and wish them well in the future. To replace them we have two new Trustees, Teresa Ravenscroft from the Drama Club and Brenda Hennessy from the Musical and Operetta Group. I would like to take this opportunity to thank sincerely the conscientious and hard working Trustees who are trying so hard to improve things within the Centre.
We would like more people to join. Membership application forms can be collected from behind the bar, the library and the Parish Council offices. If you become a member you can join the Tennis and Bowls Clubs, play snooker, enjoy subsidised drinks at the bar. You can also claim back short term parking fees when buying drinks at the bar.
Membership fees are as follows:
Renewals –
Senior Citizens £13.00
Individuals £17.00
Family £30.00
New members –
Senior Citizens £14.00
Individuals £18.00
Family £32.00.
A major project now successfully concluded has been the Curtain Fund. Chaired by Linda Fox, this committee has organised fund raising events and now after a year have raised over £5,600. Young Expressions are planning to hold a Family Quiz night on Friday 9th May (contact Jacky Craythorne 01277 3535515 for details). This, together with a further donation from Young Expressions will enable us to pay for curtains not only for the windows but also for the stage. Well done all those who have contirbuted and achieved this worthwhile result.
Some of the members of this committee want to stand down afterserving a year. We, therefore, need some other members to come forward and take their place. We meet once a month, plan fundraising events then get involved making things happen. We have a Bottle Tombola planned for the Hoticultural Show on Saturday 19th July. Please give me a ring on 01277 352360 if you would be willing to help.
I have made a Grant Application for new UPVC windows and cladding for the side and back of the hall. We will have to wait until later this year to see if we are successful, but further Grant Applications are in the pipeline so it will be interesting to see what happens. Caroline Fuller from the Parish Council is being helpful and giving advice.
I hope you will actively support the Community Association. It is an important part of village life, used by thousands during the year, by all age groups and for all kinds of interests. We are doing our best to make it a success. Why not come along and join us?
Lilian Hunter,
Chair.
